In a usability study for
the construction of a website, three key elements must be examined, according
to Alison Head in Design Wise: Task Support, Usability, and Aesthetics.
(p. 60-62) Regarding each:
-
Usability
The interface should be easy
to learn, easy to remember, pleasant to use, and cause few errors.
-
Task Support
The interface should meet
user experiences and support the tasks users need to get done.
-
Aesthetics
The interface should communicate
visually, helping users absorb information and carry out the tasks they
need to do while minimizing information overload
In developing a website for Applestar
Productions, areas within each of these categories must be considered.
The following are the intentions and expectations of the website.
Audience
It is anticipated that the
majority of the users visiting this site will be Christian women who have
attended an Applestar seminar, who are looking for additional information
on the topic presented. The secondary audience would be Christian
women in leadership positions looking for a resource to speak at their
event. Users are expected to have beginning to intermediary skills
in regard to navigating the internet. It is also anticipated that
many users will be working on older computer systems.
User Goals
Users would tend to be looking
for credibility information about the speaker, topics presented, and contact
information. Those looking for additional information about the topics
would want to be able to quickly locate the topical information desired
without a multitude of marketing material preceding it.
Functionality/ Navigation
The functionality of the
site would immediately be divided between those looking for follow up topic
information, and those looking for information about the speaker.
A side navigation bar would identify the main categories of credentials,
topics, resources, and follow up information. Each page would have
a header branding Applestar, and a footer with navigation controls to return
to the home page. Each subsequent page would also have
a sidebar with navigation buttons on the subtopics. A link to a printable
version of topics with multiple pages would be included at the beginning
of the topic to allow the user to print an entire topic. A site map
will be provided as a visual cue to the organization of the site.
Control
The intention of the site
is to empower the user to locate the necessary information from the first
page with a minimum of mouse clicks.
Learnability
The site will follow standard
navigation conventions throughout: left side navigation bar, link to home
at the bottom, with the content in the center to provide consistency throughout
the site. Only the follow up topics with sequential information will
be linear, and these will contain PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons. Every
page will be branded with the Applestar logo to assist the user in determining
when a referral link jumps to a different, non-Applestar site.
Assistance
It will not be necessary
to have a help section in this site, although an email link to the author
will be provided so the user can contact the speaker with additional questions
or to request additional information.
Appearance
The site will be typeset
in Tahoma 12, with headers in Bold Tahoma 14. The Applestar header
will feature red and green to compliment the Applestar logo. The
page background will be pink, with maroon type.
Interaction
Interaction between pages
will be rapid because of limited graphic intensity on each page.
Image use must be restricted because of the limits of processing speeds
for the typical user. There will be no sound or multimedia files
to download.
Enjoyment
Because of a pleasing visual
layout, good navigation and a consistent structure, it is intended that
users will easily find the information they desire, creating a positive
interaction with the website.
