Unit Seven
Databases and Search Capabilites
Databases are topical, indexed online warehouses of information.  Because Applestar is a biblically based organization, the website will provide links to Bible databases and Bible Study tools (see Bible Study) to allow users to do additional research on topics discussed within the site, and to provide tools the users may be unaware of.  Applestar is intended to be an educational organization, and these links provide additional resources for the user.

Search capabilities allow the user with a specific target to quickly locate the information by typing a keyword into a search engine, which functions by determining which pages in the website contain the requested word or words.   Even though the Applestar site is not large, a targeted search engine will make the user interface more robust.  I have added a search button to my side navigation bar, with links to a general search engine, provided by atomz.com, as well as an advanced search engine, also provided by the same company.  Atomz.com has the option of presetting the index to be reset on a regular basis, and I have utilized this feature to update weekly to incorporate new information.  As the site grows, the index will also grow, making the search an accurate one, preventing dead links to pages that may have been removed.
