Capella University

I received my Ph.D. in Adult Education with a focus on adult literacy from Capella University. I highly recommend the program! It's an accredited school, and all done online. I've attached some of the papers I think may be significant to the academic community who might take time to read them. In 2002 I completed my Masters Degree in Online Instructional Design there. This site contains links to some of the work I've done in my various programs.

Adult Literacy Papers

I've been doing a lot of work with Adult Literacy since we opened the Learning Center at the church. Here are some of my recent papers.

Metacognition in Native English Speaking New Readers: A Phenomenological Study
This is my dissertation, and in it, I interviewed 30 native English-speaking adults reading at the third grade or lower level to learn about their perceptions of reading and the reading process. I compared these perceptions with their understanding of the ways they thought about doing tasks they considered themselves to be highly successful in, looking for things that might be able to be leveraged to help them make strides in reading.

Accelerated Learning: Applicability to Low Literacy Learners?
Accelerated Learning has been popularized in the corporate training world. Are there any implications for ABE populations? This paper provides an overview of accelerated learning and looks at some possibilities for the adult beginning reader.
