Now What Was That Great Object Lesson For…?

Organizing the resources

Kit Materials:

  • 5 sheets of poster board
  • Stapler
  • Magic Markers
  • Plastic/Cardboard hanging file storage box
  • 2-3 boxes of hanging files (50-75)
  • 1 box file folders (100)
  • Index card file box 4x6
  • Multicolor index cards (100)
  • 1 box plastic sheet protectors (top loading)
  • String tie plastic envelopes (top or side loading)

Process

Materials are organized topically, cross-referenced wherever possible. Do not worry about setting up the whole system first. Add files as needed for new items.

Pictures

Large posters:
Seasonal: Staple together 5 large sheets of poster board and file items seasonally
Biblical: Use a portfolio of 4 sections:

Pictures:
Create a file for each main character in the Bible and file pictures after each quarter. Add additional topics as needed. Use a plastic crate or file drawer with hanging files to store them.

Resource file

Set up categories on cards in a card file and use different color cards for songs, stories, object lessons, etc. (You can also use a computer database.)

Set up cards like this example:

MOSES

Go Down Moses
Horse and Rider

Songs:
Use blue cards in the resource card file or computer database. Set up categories by Bible characters, character traits, behaviors, etc. Add categories as needed. List song titles under Bible characters, themes. If in a book, list the book title and page. File song transparencies alphabetically in hanging files. Create a master list of all song titles. This works best to keep on a computer so you can easily add new titles.

Object Lessons:
File in the resource card file, but use yellow for these. If from a book, record title and page, if concept record concept and materials.

Videos:
Record video title on pink card and file in Resource Box/File. File videos together, alphabetically on a shelf.

Application Stories:
Record title and location on a green card and put in resource file. If an auditory story, record outline on the card.

Memory Verse Visuals:
Start with OT/NT segments, and create a file adding books of the Bible as needed and file verse under each book. Cross reference in resource file if applies particularly well to a particular Bible character or topic.

Flannelgraphs:
For complete sets: Use a plastic page protector sleeve for each lesson. Label topic and figures on the envelope. If this lesson needs a figure from another sleeve because a character is used repetitively, note that figure on the sleeve and keep with the original lesson. Store entire story and sleeves in a plastic string tie envelope.

Miscellaneous figures: Use a different sleeve for men, women, furniture, accessories, animals, etc and store in a plastic string tied envelope.

Miscellaneous stories: Group figures together in a plastic sleeve. Label story and file in a notebook or plastic string tied envelope.
