22:24 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was
considered to be greatest.
25 Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over
them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors.
26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among
you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who
serves.
27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one
who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as
one who serves.
28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
29 And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred
one on me,
30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and
sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |

13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his
power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and
wrapped a towel around his waist.
5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash
his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around
him.
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going
to wash my feet?"
7 Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but
later you will understand."
8 "No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered,
"Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
9 "Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my
hands and my head as well!"
10 Jesus answered, "A person who has had a bath needs only to
wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every
one of you."
11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why
he said not every one was clean.
12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes
and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?"
he asked them.
13 "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that
is what I am.
14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet,
you also should wash one another's feet.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done
for you.
16 I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor
is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you
do them. |
31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away
on account of me, for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and
the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'
32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I
never will."
34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night,
before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will
never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. |
27 "You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written:
"'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'
28 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
29 Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."
30 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today--yes, tonight--before
the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times."
31 But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with
you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same. |
31 "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.
32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not
fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."
33 But he replied, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison
and to death."
34 Jesus answered, "I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows
today, you will deny three times that you know me."
35 Then Jesus asked them, "When I sent you without purse, bag
or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Nothing," they answered.
36 He said to them, "But now if you have a purse, take it, and
also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
37 It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors'
; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written
about me is reaching its fulfillment."
38 The disciples said, "See, Lord, here are two swords." "That
is enough," he replied. |
36 Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus
replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow
later."
37 Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay
down my life for you."
38 Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for
me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me
three times! |
20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the
Twelve.
21 And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth,
one of you will betray me."
22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other,
"Surely not I, Lord?"
23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl
with me will betray me.
24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But
woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him
if he had not been born."
25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not
I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." |
18 While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I
tell you the truth, one of you will betray me--one who is eating with me."
19 They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely
not I?"
20 "It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread
into the bowl with me.
21 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But
woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him
if he had not been born." |
21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine
on the table.
22 The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed, but woe to
that man who betrays him."
23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might
be who would do this. |
18 "I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen.
But this is to fulfill the scripture: 'He who shares my bread has lifted
up his heel against me.'
19 "I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does
happen you will believe that I am He.
20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts
me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified,
"I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me."
22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which
of them he meant.
23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining
next to him.
24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which
one he means."
25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece
of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of
bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.
27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What
you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him,
28 but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was
telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something
to the poor.
30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it
was night. |
Observe
What did Jesus know
was coming, according to John (v 3)?
What unusual thing did Jesus do as host
of the meal?
What was Peter's issue with this?
How did Jesus instruct Peter?
The disciples argued about who would be
greatest. What did Jesus promise them in Luke (v.29-30)?
Jesus predicted that his friends who would
be given great things in Luke's account (v.28) would fall away. Peter,
ever ready for an arguement, challenges this. What does Jesus tell
him?
Who else promises allegiance in Matthew's
account?

Interpret
Notice the contrast between Jesus' humility
in washing the disciples' feet and the arguement the disciples had about
who would be the greatest. The dispute and the foot washing are only
recorded in one gospel account. Which do you think came first during
the course of the evening?
Count how many times Jesus told the disciples
what was going to come.

The disciples didn't seem to "get it"even
though Jesus had told them much of what was to come. Sometimes we
are thick headed too. Why do you think this is? |
